Ungrateful ( He forgot where he came from)

He forgot where he came from.

He didn’t need his family and friends.

Success blinded him and he forgot where

he came from. A mind corrupted by money,

blurred vision of the future. He became a moving

controversy ameliorating his empire on shaky ground.

His accomplishments changed him and he forgot

about the people that helped him achieve his dream.

Distancing himself from his family, alienating his old

friends because they didn’t fit the illusion of a perfect

life that he’d created. He was ashamed of where he

came from. His family and friends embarrassed him.

He disconnected with everything that reminded him

of his past. Deleting any documented history related

to his past. Paying gratitude with selfishness and hate.

Clutching onto an idealistic life he’d grown accustomed to.

Dining with fair weather friends who know nothing about

his past. Living a lie, a pathetic life breathing contradictions.

Living in denial, oblivious to the truth. A con artist caressing

a fake identity. See, he sprung from war torn lands. A part

of a deep rich history talking about his cultural roots and

identity. A product of the second generation of poverty.

A life dominated by struggle and hardship.

He battled an employment crisis, and bankruptcy most of his

life. Going to bed hungry and living off provisions from friends,

family and a few well wishers. Constantly in need, and fighting

depression. Through his dark moments, his family and friends

comforted him. Encouraging and supporting his dream. Helping

him climb up the ladder of success. Somehow in between

accumulated riches, forged perfect lifestyle and the stings of his

past, he became cold and forgot about the people that rode with

him before he was anything. Quick to trash and ignore them, openly

declare that he doesn’t know them. Denying a past that contributed

to his future. Avoiding truth that is a part of his life.

Time veered off and realization stung him through the dark hours as

he paused to recall his past. Making peace amidst sobs to a ghost

audience he denied when he thought that he’d got everything

and had everything he wanted and didn’t need them. Buying time

with prayer in a bid to fix him mistakes and own up to his past.

Pangs of guilt, his success deteriorates. His empire is crumbling.

Now, he remembers where he came from.

He needs his family and friends.

I am an African woman and a mother to a precious little angel. I love to use the term "Afro-floetic Queen" mostly to describe my poetry and my roots. I love poetry...art, soul music and inspirational bits of knowledge to offer advice and counseling to those who need it. I can be very witty, straight forward but fun. Ha. ha... A colorful perception of the world - expressed in my poetry. I want to inspire people with my Poetry...give them hope, while also advising them. Life is a learning process and i am happy when one of my pieces directly affects or inspires one of my readers. Let's take a detour around experience, and let me fill your minds with sweet poetic juices.... Note: Just changed my user name from FloetryC to AfroetryC because the latter is more personal and describes my Spoken Word Poetry better.

    1. Thank you Antonio for the compliment.
You’re right about the connection of this piece and these times.
Most people tend to lose themselves in the material world when they get successful and forget where they came from and the people that helped them get where they are.
      Really sad.

I appreciate the support, secret admirer and fan.

      Thank you.
